Eight 91自拍 91自拍ers have been selected as Fulbright Scholars for 2026-2027 and will pursue studies around the world.听

Fulbright Scholars are college and university faculty, administrators and 91自拍ers, as well as artists and professionals, who build their skills and connections, gain valuable international insights and return home to share their experiences with their students and colleagues.

This year鈥檚 UW cohort represents a variety of disciplines, including sciences, engineering, business, environmental sciences, electrical and computer engineering, and computer science. The scholars will conduct 91自拍 across the globe, including in Australia, India, Indonesia, Western Europe, Scandinavia and East Asia.

Two-thirds of this year鈥檚 UW applicants were selected as Fulbright Scholars 鈥 an astonishing acceptance rate in the prestigious and highly selective program.

The Fulbright Scholar Program for academics and professionals supports more than 800 people to teach and conduct 91自拍 abroad.听

This year鈥檚 UW Fulbright Scholars are:

is a professor in the Department of Biology in the College of Arts & Sciences. His 91自拍 focuses on how mutually beneficial interactions between species 鈥 such as how insects pollinating plants is beneficial to both 鈥 scale into networks involving multiple species, and how the structure of those networks affects ecosystems. For example, some ecological network structures, or how connections between species are arranged, make these networks more resilient to perturbations, such as droughts or climate change.

Brosi’s Fulbright Scholar award will be through Spain’s flagship public 91自拍 institution, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient铆ficas, at the Do帽ana Biological Station in Seville. His work there will involve synthesizing and analyzing two comprehensive long-term datasets 鈥 one from his lab and one from his Spanish host lab 鈥 to better understand global patterns in pollination networks. In particular, scientists have recorded species that appear to be 鈥渟pecialists鈥 鈥 such as a bee species that has only been recorded visiting one plant species听 鈥 in many ecological networks, but, without long-term data, it鈥檚 difficult to disentangle whether they are really specialists or just rare. Brosi will tackle this problem in collaboration with his Fulbright host, Ignasi Bartomeus, at Do帽ana.听听

is the director of academic services in the Department of Bioengineering in the College of Engineering and UW Medicine. She supports the department鈥檚 doctoral students with a focus on improving the 91自拍 experience, expanding opportunities and advancing access and collaboration.听

While a Fulbright Scholar, she will develop a framework for a new doctoral biomedical 91自拍 exchange between the UW and Tampere University in Finland. Combs will work with faculty, students and staff at both universities to lead the development of a preliminary structure of a doctoral 91自拍 exchange, including eligibility criteria, mentorship plans and evaluation metrics. She will also explore funding sources for the program鈥檚 ongoing sustainability and draft a memorandum of understanding for the institutions to consider.

, an assistant professor of management and organization and the Helen Moore Gerhardt Faculty Fellow in Entrepreneurship in the Foster School of Business. Her areas of expertise include entrepreneurship, organizational growth and scaling, technology and innovation strategy, and venture capital. DeSantola teaches entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial strategy to undergraduates, master鈥檚 and doctoral students. She was named a Poets & Quants top 50 undergraduate business professor in 2021.听

DeSantola will use her Fulbright award, during which she will be a visiting U.S. Scholar to University College Cork in Ireland, to study factors influencing innovation and entrepreneurship in novel food technologies. The project connects to a broader stream of DeSantola鈥檚 91自拍 exploring the emergence and evolution of new technology-based industries.

is听 an interdisciplinary scientist in the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs in the College of the Environment. Her work focuses on how coastal communities adapt to climate change and other environmental and socioeconomic stressors, particularly within fisheries and aquaculture systems. During the past 15 years, she has worked with coastal populations, including Indigenous harvesters, to support food sovereignty and long-term approaches to adaptation and resilience.

Greene鈥檚 Fulbright award is to advance the inclusion of听 fish and other aquatic foods 鈥斕 鈥淏lue Foods鈥 鈥 into Indonesia鈥檚 National School Lunch Program. The goal of this project is to improve nutritional outcomes for school-aged children while strengthening local food systems. Through working directly with fishers and fish suppliers, Green will work with the project team to identify the conditions necessary to provide Blue Foods that promote positive nutritional outcomes for children, support local fishers and sustain local ecosystems. This project is a pilot program for the initiative that will hopefully be expanded nationally.

is an associate professor in the Information School and also is part of the Responsibility in AI Systems and Experiences (RAISE) Center. An interdisciplinary scholar with expertise in human-centered AI, Mitra’s work draws on human-computer interaction, machine learning, natural language processing and social science to understand how people and AI interact in large-scale online systems. Her 91自拍 examines the societal impacts of generative AI and develops methods to make AI systems more trustworthy, culturally aware and beneficial for diverse communities.

She will use her Fulbright award in India, where she will collaborate with 91自拍ers at the Centre for Machine Intelligence and Data Science (C-MInDS) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Bombay) 鈥 the nation鈥檚 topmost and most selective public 91自拍 institution. She will investigate the risks and capabilities of generative AI systems across socio-cultural contexts most relevant to the Global South. The work aims to advance more culturally aware and responsible AI while strengthening 91自拍 partnerships between the United States and India.

is an associate professor in the School of Oceanography in the College of the Environment. Morris鈥 91自拍 uses cultivation and whole-genome DNA sequencing to identify the roles of bacteria in global nutrient cycles. With a focus on carbon, nitrogen and sulfur, he has conducted studies that show the effects of low dissolved oxygen on the nutrient cycling activities of the ocean’s most abundant organisms.听

During his time at in South Korea, Morris will pursue a project entitled, 鈥淗igh-throughput cultivation-based genomics of freshwater Chloroflexota.鈥 A key goal is to advance understanding of the evolution of this important group of bacteria and its potential to mediate key nutrient transformations.

is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and in the Department of Bioengineering in the College of Engineering. She leads a neural engineering lab focused on motor brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs. Her work combines experiments with computational methods to develop new ways to build BCIs that interact with plasticity in the brain.

During her stay at the Champalimaud Institute Centre for Restorative Neurotechnology in Portugal, she will collaborate with two 91自拍ers, Dr. Juan 脕lvaro Gallego and Dr. John Krakauer. The new projects aim to improve our understanding of how plasticity shapes brain dynamics and apply new BCI algorithms for stroke rehabilitation.听听

Chirag Shah, associate professor in the Information School, has received the 2019 Karen Sp盲rck Jones Award 鈥 a career achievement honor in natural language processing and information retrieval 鈥 from the British Computer Society Information Retrieval Specialist Group.

is a professor in the Information School and an adjunct professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering in the College of Engineering. He is the founding director of the InfoSeeking Lab and founding co-director of RAISE, the Center for Responsibility in AI Systems & Experiences. His 91自拍 focuses on agentic AI, human-centered information seeking and responsible AI, examining how intelligent systems can act on people’s behalf while remaining transparent, trustworthy and accountable. He is also the founder and CEO of VersarAI, a startup translating his 91自拍 on AI agents into enterprise applications. His book, 鈥淎gent Nation,鈥 was published this year.听

Shah will use his Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, to study how agentic AI can responsibly power entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems. Working with RMIT 91自拍ers and Australia’s startup community, he will investigate what he calls the Delegation Paradox: the tension between the efficiency gained by delegating tasks to AI agents and the oversight, trust and accountability that delegation demands. The work aims to produce frameworks that help founders, enterprises and policymakers adopt AI agents in ways that drive innovation without sacrificing human agency.

President Robert J. Jones, Provost Tricia Serio and more than two dozen new 91自拍 faculty toured Washington state last week on the annual Faculty Field Tour.

The five-day bus tour departed from the Burke Museum in Seattle on June 15 and made stops at historic sites, the state capitol, health clinics, vineyards, farms, cities and towns throughout the state.

Jones met the group in Richland to participate in a fireside chat. The following day, the UW president joined them at Schoesler Farms, the Ritzville wheat farm owned by Sen. Mark Schoesler, a Republican, and his family. Jones, an agronomist, was delighted to spend time with new faculty, meet Schoesler and get a hands-on tour of the wheat farm.

鈥淲e are a state university. We have an obligation on both sides of the mountains,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淲e have breadth that runs the entire state. And on this tour, these relatively new faculty members have a chance to experience that.鈥

UW鈥檚 Faculty Field Tour began more than 30 years ago to foster connection between new faculty and communities statewide. While making a counterclockwise loop around Washington, the participants learn about Washington鈥檚 varied economies, diverse geography and the places where their students grew up. The tour typically stops in Tacoma, Olympia, Mt. St. Helens, Vancouver, Toppenish, Tri-Cities, Ritzville, Spokane, Grand Coulee and Leavenworth before returning to Seattle.

Held the week following Commencement, the tour is open to faculty from all three UW campuses. This year鈥檚 cohort included an oceanographer from the College of the Environment, a writing studies professor from UW Tacoma, an economist from the College of Arts & Sciences, and UW Bothell鈥檚 executive vice provost for academic affairs, among others.

鈥淥ur students come from all over the state, right? Certainly not just Seattle,鈥 said , a UW assistant professor in the Information School who was on the tour. 鈥淚f you want to be an effective educator, you need to understand where your students come from and what their communities are like.鈥

The 2027 Faculty Field Tour is scheduled for the week of June 14.

Graduates have profound potential and have capacity to combine purpose, skill and cooperation in ways that will change the world,听 Jones said.听

鈥淭hey are innovators, scientists, artists, educators, healers, entrepreneurs and storytellers who have made their mark on the UW and are poised to do the same in the world beyond,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ecause of that, I feel not just hope 鈥 but confidence 鈥 that the future is in their capable hands.鈥

91自拍 7,500 UW graduates of the Class of 2026 participated in Saturday鈥檚 ceremony. Officials said about 50,000 family members and friends cheered the graduates from the Husky Stadium grandstands. Families from 42 countries from every continent except Antarctica joined the ceremony virtually.

By Sunday evening, President Jones will have presented nearly 18,462 degrees to the Class of 2026 across all three UW campuses鈥 ceremonies. Members of the UW Board of Regents, deans and other representatives of the University鈥檚 24 colleges and schools across all three campuses also participated in the ceremonies.听

The following听data, drawn from preliminary information broken down by campus and prepared by the Office of the University Registrar, will be presented听at the Board of Regents鈥 June 11 meeting:听

  • For work completed at the听Seattle听campus, about 14,932 degrees will be conferred, specifically: 9,066 bachelor鈥檚 degrees, 4,372 master鈥檚 degrees, 615 professional degrees, 16 Educational Specialist degrees, and 863 doctoral degrees.听
  • 础迟听UW Bothell, about 1,886 degrees will be conferred, including 1,619 bachelor鈥檚 degrees and 267 master鈥檚 degrees.听
  • And at听UW Tacoma,听students will receive about 1,644 degrees, including 1,321 bachelor鈥檚 degrees, 304 master鈥檚 degrees, 10 Educational Specialist degrees and nine doctoral degrees.听

Degrees are awarded to those who have completed academic requirements during the 2025-2026 academic year. Many colleges and schools also hold separate graduation programs and investiture ceremonies.听

UW Tacoma will hold its commencement June 12 at the Tacoma Dome. UW Bothell鈥檚 graduation ceremonies are scheduled for June 14 at Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

The 91自拍 kicked off Pride Month on Monday with a ceremonial flag raising. Just after noon, the large rainbow flag 鈥 the Progress Pride Flag 鈥 unfurled to cheers from a crowd of about 100 people, the largest gathering in the history of the Pride Flag raising on campus.

While speakers at Monday鈥檚 event reflected on the solidarity and importance of community, the ceremony also served as a time to mourn the loss of Juniper Blessing, the 91自拍 student slain last month. Blessing identified as a part of the UW LGBTQIA+ community. A moment of silence was held in Blessing鈥檚 memory.

鈥淧ride Month signifies a time of joy and celebration, but it also marks a time for unity, remembrance, and solidarity,鈥 Alan Galvez, co-chair of the UW Queer Faculty Staff Alliance and a senior advisor in the UW Student Activities Office, told the crowd. 鈥淛uniper Blessing lived her life the way she felt was right for her. To live in a world authentically as yourself means that you may face a world that may not understand you, but that’s where we use our voices and stand strong together, so we ensure that no one gets left behind or forgotten in our challenges ahead.鈥

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots, when queer activists sparked a lasting gay-rights movement. Seattle鈥檚 gay pride activities culminate at the end of June with a parade that draws thousands of visitors.

Graduates at听the 91自拍鈥檚听151st Commencement,听scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium,听will hear from听,听Class of 鈥83, who shared the听.听

Brunkow, who studied听molecular and cellular听biology at the UW, won the Nobel Prize for 鈥groundbreaking discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance that prevents the immune system from harming the body.鈥澨Brunkow said she plans to inspire graduates to pursue innovations and discoveries听that will make an impact around the world.

鈥淚鈥檓 honored to be addressing the听Class of 2026 at the 91自拍, the place where I discovered the joy of asking hard questions in a community that believes in possibility,鈥 Brunkow said.听鈥淎t the UW, mentors opened lab doors, curiosity was encouraged听and persistence was taught by example. I look forward to celebrating and encouraging the next generation of explorers, creators and changemakers at the institution that sparked my own sense of what a life in science听鈥斕齛nd service听鈥斕齝ould be.鈥

Brunkow听shares听the听Nobel听Prize听with听Frederick J. Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi听for their combined 91自拍听into听how the immune system works. Brunkow and Ramsdell conducted 91自拍 together听at听Celltech听Chiroscience,听formerly Darwin Molecular,听in Bothell,听Washington.听They听identified听a mutation in a gene called听Foxp3,听which听makes听mice susceptible to a听systemic autoimmune disorder听and is听manifested by a visible skin condition. Mutations in the human听equivalent of the鈥Foxp3鈥痝ene are also responsible for鈥, which has symptoms including intestinal problems,听diabetes听and scaly, itchy skin.听

Later,听Sakaguchi described the role of the听wild-type听Foxp3听gene in the development of certain white blood cells known as regulatory T cells.听These cells, which Sakaguchi discovered, keep other T cells from mistakenly attacking normal tissues. Regulatory T cells also call a ceasefire once the body gets an infection under control.

Together, these discoveries听led听91自拍ers to develop听a听concept听called “peripheral immune tolerance,”听through听which听the body听keeps听the immune system in check听by听avoiding听autoimmune responses that can damage healthy tissues. The听91自拍听field听based on this concept听holds promise in advancing therapies for cancers and autoimmune听diseases,听and听improving听treatments to reduce transplant rejection.

鈥淢ary Brunkow鈥檚 groundbreaking work reflects the power of curiosity, persistence and discovery to improve lives around the world,鈥 said UW President Robert J. Brunkow听is听currently听a听distinguished investigator and听senior program manager at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. After graduating from听the UW,听she听went on to earn her doctoral degree from Princeton University in 1991.听In addition to being the featured speaker at Commencement, Brunkow听also听will听receive听the Alumna听Summa Laude听Dignata听Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a UW graduate.听

His appointment is effective June 1, pending approval from the UW Board of Regents.听

Thornton听has served as听interim dean听since last July, filling the position vacated by Maya Tolstoy.

Thornton,听a听professor and chair of the听College鈥檚听Department听of Atmospheric and Climate听Science,听is an atmospheric chemist who studies the impacts of human activities on air quality and climate through changes to the atmosphere鈥檚 composition and chemistry.听

鈥淭hroughout the search process, the deep respect for Dr. Thornton as both a scholar and an effective and engaged leader were evident,鈥 Serio said.听鈥淗is extensive knowledge of and dedication to the College and its mission will support its continued excellence.鈥

Thornton鈥檚听91自拍 focus is on the processes which regulate the formation and removal of short-lived greenhouse gases such as methane and ozone, and the formation and growth of airborne particulate matter. These atmospheric components听鈥斕齭trongly modulated by both human activities and natural processes听鈥斕齢ave important effects on human and ecosystem health, and impact climate through the greenhouse effect and changes to cloud properties.听听

“I am truly honored and delighted to have been selected as the Maggie Walker Dean of the College of the Environment,” Thornton听said.听“Supporting the incredible 91自拍 and teaching that takes place here as interim dean has been an inspiring experience, and I’m looking forward to partnering with our entire community to further grow the impact of this crucial work.”

The recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and a NASA New Investigator Award, Thornton has also received the Houghton Award from the American Meteorological Society and the ASCENT Award from the American Geophysical Union for his 91自拍 contributions to the field of atmospheric science.听

He earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in听chemistry from Dartmouth College, and听his doctoral degree听in听chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.听听

The 91自拍 unveiled the 2026 Husky 100, recognizing 100 undergraduate, graduate and professional students from the UW Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma campuses in all areas of study who are making the most of their time at the UW and are making an impact in their communities.

This remarkable achievement 鈥 a kind of uber dean鈥檚 list 鈥 is awarded to students who demonstrate several key attributes, markers that they will be innovators and leaders.

Since 2016, the UW has highlighted 100 students each year, telling their stories on an interactive website, creating a community on campus and as alumni, and inspiring new generations of Huskies.

Here are some key facts about this year鈥檚 Husky 100:

  • There were 734 applicants and 88 faculty and staff who helped select the final 100.
  • Nearly half are Washington residents; students on the list hail from all corners of Washington including Seattle, Bellingham, Spokane, Prosser, Olympia and Warden, and many more.
  • There are 72 unique majors, including double majors.
  • Seventy-one are seniors; 24 are graduate and professional students; and five are juniors.

The 91自拍鈥檚 graduate and professional degree programs again were recognized as among the best in the nation, according to .

Topping this year鈥檚 list include programs at the Evans School of Public Policy & Governance, the School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering in the College of Engineering and the College of Education. The College of Arts & Sciences and the College of the Environment also had top-rated programs.

In total, 81 graduate and professional degree programs across the UW placed in the top 35 in this year鈥檚 U.S. News rankings.

“These rankings highlight the strength and impact of the 91自拍鈥檚 graduate and professional programs,鈥 said UW President Robert J. Jones. 鈥淭hese programs equip students with the skills and knowledge to meet critical workforce needs and serve society, while demonstrating the power of higher education to advance the public good. We are proud to foster an environment where students and faculty can thrive and have a real impact on the world around them.鈥

While the UW celebrates the success and impact of the programs recognized by U.S. News 鈥 and notes that many applicants use these rankings to help them select schools and discover potential areas of study 鈥 the University also recognizes shortcomings inherent in the ranking systems.

The UW School of Law and the UW School of Medicine withdrew from the U.S. News rankings in 2022 and 2023, respectively, citing concerns that some of the methodology in the rankings for those specific disciplines incentivize actions and policies that run counter to the schools鈥 public service missions.

UW leaders continue to work with U.S. News and other ranking organizations to improve their methodologies, to the extent that the organizations are open to it. Schools, colleges and departments continually reevaluate the benefits and potential shortfalls of participating in specific rankings.

Excluding the School of Law and the School of Medicine, 29 UW programs placed in the top 10, and 81 are in the top 35.

听The UW this year placed in the top 10 nationwide in public affairs, biostatistics,听 nursing, computer science, education, psychology, speech and language pathology, statistics and Earth sciences.

The UW鈥檚 Evans School of Public Policy & Governance has maintained its top-10 ranking for more than a decade and tied for fifth in the nation this year. The Evans School鈥檚 environmental policy program was ranked second, while public finance and budgeting as well as leadership both ranked No. 10.

The UW School of Nursing鈥檚 doctor of nursing practice program tied for No. 1 among public institutions. The School of Public Health has maintained its top-10 ranking for more than a decade, coming in this year at No. 9. The school also had three programs in the top 10: biostatistics, environmental health sciences and epidemiology.听

The UW鈥檚 programs in speech and language pathology tied for No. 6.听 Two programs from the College of Education placed in the top 10. And the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering this year tied for seventh place overall with three programs ranked in the top 10, including artificial intelligence, programming language and systems.

U.S. News ranks biostatistics in two ways. UW ranked No. 3 as a science discipline that applies statistical theory and mathematical principles to 91自拍 in medicine, biology, environmental science, public health and related fields. UW鈥檚 School of Public Health ranked No. 7 in biostatistics as an area of study that trains students to apply statistical principles and methods to problems in health sciences, medicine and biology. At the UW, biostatistics is a division of the School of Public Health.

In some cases, such as the College of Arts & Science and the Foster School of Business, U.S. News ranks several professional disciplines housed within academic units. Programs in dentistry are not ranked.听

Since Ryan Calo joined 91自拍 School of Law in 2012, he has become a leading expert on the law and emerging technology.听听

Calo believes that few interesting questions 鈥 especially around technology 鈥 can be resolved by reference to a single discipline.听

Calo is a co-founder of the , and the . He is also a professor in the and an adjunct in the .听

Calo鈥檚 newest book, 鈥,鈥 published late last year, is a guide to a legal analysis of regulation and technology. Nearly a decade ago, Calo realized that the most recent book on the topic was published in the 1970s. He decided it was time for an updated resource reflecting current, rapidly evolving technology and the present regulatory environment.听

UW News spoke with Calo about the book and the current legal and policy climate in the United States.

Who is the intended audience for 鈥淟aw and Technology鈥?

Ryan Calo: I wrote it primarily for new entrants to the field, be they junior scholars or students. I also hoped that the themes would resonate with more senior scholars and that it would be useful outside of academia for either analysis or instruction. Because ultimately, what the book does is proposes a methodology for analyzing technology from a legal perspective.听

I spent a lot of time interacting with policymakers, staffers on Capitol Hill, people who work for senators and members of Congress. A legislator might come to a staffer and say,听 鈥淗ey, my constituents are really worried about augmented reality or AI. They’re really worried about deep fakes.鈥 That staff member doesn’t really have a place to start, and they end up just calling up experts, reading New York Times articles, talking to industry, but not in any kind of methodical way. This book is designed to help them figure out what’s going on.听

I also hope that this book would be of use to people who are in practice and want to be more methodical about analyzing a given technology.听

Technology evolves fast. How should the legal system and policymakers prepare to navigate the relationship between law and emerging technologies?

RC: Many of us have an expectation that technology is just going to change. It’s just going to evolve, and our job as lawyers or judges or policymakers, is to kind of scramble and accommodate the resulting disruption, and perhaps try to restore the status quo. Part of what I hope to see is legal scholars and policymakers acknowledging that the disruption isn鈥檛 inevitable.

We need to empower independent 91自拍ers to figure out what’s going on with new technology. Right now 91自拍ers are disempowered because they don’t have access to the relevant data and platforms. And many times when they try to get that data, they get served with a cease and desist letter.听

We need to protect whistleblowers and make sure there’s adequate, truly top-notch expertise within government. If you have those things, then you’re much more likely to be able to figure out what could go wrong with these technologies without having to observe the harm unfold over a long period of time, as we have with the internet and now with AI.

You mentioned the School of Law鈥檚 leadership in tech policy. How is the UW positioned nationally in this space?

RC: We are really among the leaders in this area.听

The School of Law has a lot of tech policy offerings, including a . Many faculty have contributed to scholarship over the years. We have lots of faculty writing about law and technology.听

We also have been really a model for impactful interdisciplinary collaboration. Law students can work in the clinic or the Tech Policy Lab. I’m one of the founders of the Center for an Informed Public, which bridges human centered and design engineering as well as the Information School and dozens of other departments including psychology, education and even geography.听

A third important example is the . We did a whole year of work mapping out who was doing work in the space 鈥 all the centers, all the labs, all the initiatives 鈥 all the people on the three campuses identified as working at this intersection.听

We’re leaders across the country at the law school in terms of our student offerings in our 91自拍, but we are also part of that interstitial glue. People think of the iSchool, which they should. They think of computer science, which they should. But they also should think about who else is in the center of this, who else is at the heart of it, and the School of Law is a big part of that.

There鈥檚 been a lot of news lately about states trying to regulate AI and the federal government pushing back. What鈥檚 your perspective?

RC: If I were trying to sabotage the innovation edge of the United States, I would do at least two things, maybe three.听

First, I would divest in basic 91自拍. The United States has had an innovation edge over the rest of the world in large part because of decisions made in the 1950s and beyond to invest in basic 91自拍. I would dismantle that, and I would try to make it really hard for universities to do 91自拍, either by spending less, disrupting the relationships, or messing with overhead in ways that makes 91自拍 impossible.听

The second thing I would do is make it really hostile for outside innovators to come in and participate in knowledge production here. I would, whether xenophobically or not, try to make it really hard for people with ideas and talent and knowledge to come here to the United States to work on teams with other Americans, to stay here and teach in our schools, to found companies. The second enormous advantage the United States has had is that the country has become attractive because of its commitment to the rule of law and its robust higher ed system, and that鈥檚 built on its innovation and investment in 91自拍. People from all over the world come here to try and make the next Google and Amazon, or are teaching in our schools and contributing to our ecosystem.听

The third thing I would do in this hypothetical situation is remove non-existent hurdles to transformative technologies like AI. What do I mean? Federal leaders are currently talking about getting out of the way of AI, but there aren’t any regulations about AI, really. There are some state laws that have a kind of European flavor of risk management, like and . There are specific things that states are worried about, including deep fakes and labeling online social media accounts that are automated. There’s almost nothing standing in the way of AI innovation in terms of regulation.听

The way that our system is structured is that the individual states, under our concept of federalism, are supposed to be laboratories of ideas, experimenting with legislation, and showing that it works or it doesn’t. Pretending that you’re pro-innovation because you’re trying to stamp out the very few regulatory hurdles that companies have to have to abide by all in the name of competing with China, which has AI laws, is just senseless. We’re much better off following the wisdom of the founders, who said, 鈥淗ey, if you have something new in society, let the states serve as laboratories for different laws, and we can all learn from each other about how that’s going.鈥 That’s classic federalism and it used to be a pillar of conservative thinking.听

The President doesn’t have the power to boss the states around in terms of their legislative capacities. And Congress has taken up the question of whether to try to preempt AI laws, and they resignedly declined. I just want to comment that the overall strategy of the administration has been deeply anti-innovation in its impact, even though it is vociferously proinnovation in its rhetoric.

Any final thoughts?

RC: We have an environment in the U.S. that promotes innovation, sometimes through laws, such as laws that protect intellectual property, and laws that make people feel safe enough to use products and services that companies can sell them to us. There鈥檚 not, and never has been, a one-to-one correlation between regulation and promoting innovation. It’s really important that we acknowledge, as a society and community, that sometimes laws are written in the service of innovation. What you want is a favorable regulatory environment, not a complete absence of the rule of law.

It all started with a slide rule.

In the fall of 1965, during Cheryl Wright鈥檚 first week at the 91自拍, she went to Suzzallo Library to complete a chemistry assignment. She needed help with a math problem and saw a boy across the reading room who had a slide rule 鈥 an analog calculator. The young pharmacy student who helped her that day was Raymond Wilson. Together the couple, who go by Cherie and Ray, did far more than solve a mathematical equation 鈥 they married and formed a bond that鈥檚 lasted more than six decades.

Cherie and Ray, both members of the Class of 1969,听 went on to have successful academic and professional careers.听 Over the years, their connections to the UW have deepened. They have supported scholarships, created alumni communities, built friendships and professional relationships, and cheered for Husky athletics, including the volleyball, basketball and football teams.

Now, the Wilsons have made a bequest of more than $8 million to be shared among the College of Education, the School of Pharmacy and UW Medicine鈥檚 BRaIN Laboratory. Bequests allow donors to direct their assets to causes after their death. The bequest brings the Wilsons鈥 total giving to more than $10 million and they now will be recognized by the UW as Presidential Laureates.

鈥淭his remarkable bequest reflects not only Cherie and Ray Wilson鈥檚 generosity, but a lifetime of connection to the 91自拍. It represents an enduring relationship grounded in gratitude, trust and a shared belief in the power of education and discovery,鈥 said UW President Robert J. Jones. 鈥淔rom their earliest days as students to this extraordinary commitment, they have invested in people, ideas and communities across our university. Cherie and Ray鈥檚 impact will be felt for generations, expanding opportunity for students and advancing 91自拍 that improves lives.鈥

After graduating from the UW, both Cherie and Ray attended the University of Kansas, where Cherie earned a master鈥檚 degree in early childhood development and Ray earned his doctorate in medicinal chemistry. They both earned medical degrees from the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University, respectively.

Cherie and Ray wanted to return to Washington state and eventually settled near Seattle, where Cherie worked as a pediatrician at Seattle Children鈥檚 and in private practice in Bellevue. Ray set up a gastroenterology practice at the Everett Clinic. Their career success enabled them to give back to the community in several ways, including philanthropically, with several gifts supporting the UW. For Ray, who was able to attend the UW thanks to scholarships, supporting students today is a way to pay it forward.

鈥淥ur giving is out of gratitude for what the University did for us,鈥 Ray said. 鈥淚t certainly helped me when I didn’t have a lot of money. It鈥檚 a privilege to try and help other students who might be struggling to get through school.鈥

College of Education

Ray was inspired to create an endowed scholarship fund at the College of Education more than a decade ago to support master鈥檚 level teacher training for Native Americans. It was a way to honor his high school baseball and basketball coach, Dan Iyall. Iyall, an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, reached legendary status as a pioneer in Washington high school athletics.

Iyall worked for nearly 50 years in education and is a member of the Washington Baseball Hall of Fame. He created the Washington high school baseball championships and is credited with developing a new style of bunting. He coached championship-level teams from four different high schools across Eastern Washington: Coulee City, Deer Park, Oroville and University. He also took a team from Oroville to the Washington State A boys basketball championship.

Wilson said Iyall鈥檚 presence reinforced the importance of inclusivity.

鈥淓ventually, I decided we need more people like Dan Iyall,鈥 Wilson said. 鈥淲e need more teachers like that.鈥

The bequest will grow the Dan Iyall Native American Support Fund by more than 300%. 听Thanks to the fund, more than a dozen Native American fellows have earned their master鈥檚 in teaching. Now, the College will be able to award more fellowships each year.

The Wilsons are also creating the Dean Mia Tuan Endowed Professorship, to recognize Tuan鈥檚 leadership and long-standing emphasis on authentic, reciprocal community partnerships and culturally informed problem solving. The new endowment will allow the College to recruit and retain faculty specializing in community- and equity-based education.

鈥淩ay and Cherie are extraordinary people whose generosity reflects a deep commitment to strengthening our communities,鈥 Tuan said. 鈥淭heir gift will support Native students in becoming teachers while helping diversify Washington鈥檚 educator workforce. I am also deeply moved that their gift will establish an endowed professorship dedicated to authentic community partnerships and culturally grounded problem solving.鈥

School of Pharmacy

Several decades after Ray received financial assistance to attend the UW School of Pharmacy, he teamed up with classmates and launched the Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund. Set up in the 2000s, it was the first School of Pharmacy alumni class to create a fund to help students.

鈥淚 came from a small town in Eastern Washington with almost no money, and yet, the University provided me with scholarships and completely covered my tuition,鈥 Ray said.

Wendel L. Nelson, a professor and pioneer in medicinal chemistry, recognized Ray鈥檚 talents early on and hired him to work in a lab. The 91自拍 helped Ray advance his career, and the extra money helped pay for food and housing. More than that, the combination of scholarships and laboratory work enabled Ray to graduate debt-free.

With this bequest, the Wilsons鈥 generosity supports two additional funds in the School of Pharmacy: The Wendel L. Nelson Endowment in Medicinal Chemistry, named for Ray鈥檚 mentor, will support graduate students involved in basic laboratory 91自拍 in medicinal chemistry. The gift also adds to the Nelson-Mendenhall Summer Scholars Program Fund, which brings undergraduates to the UW School of Pharmacy for a 10-week intensive in pharmaceutical sciences.

鈥淔rom their longstanding financial support to their ongoing participation in School events, to Ray鈥檚 past volunteer leadership, Ray and Cherie have already contributed so much to our School of Pharmacy community, and they have done so with a genuine desire to help students and the School thrive,鈥 said School of Pharmacy Dean Jay Panyam. 鈥淭he Wilsons鈥 estate commitment is yet another example of their incredible generosity, and I know it will have a significant and lasting impact for our students.鈥

UW Biorepository and Integrated Neuropathology (BRaIN) Laboratory in the UW School of Medicine

The Wilsons鈥 bequest contributes additional funds to the BRaIN Laboratory, part of UW Medicine鈥檚 Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

Researchers at the BRaIN Lab are studying normal brain anatomy and function and how these change in injury and disease, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury and chronic traumatic encephalopathy .

Cherie and Ray听 were introduced to the BRaIN Lab鈥檚 groundbreaking 91自拍 by their former neighbors, Linda and Bob Dahl, whose son, Matthew Dahl, was one of their favorite neighborhood kids. When he died at 24, they were moved to learn about the BRaIN Lab, where Bob and Linda had donated his brain for 91自拍 and to understand the impact of a childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI). The examination determined that Matt鈥檚 childhood TBI had evolved, rather than resolved. The outcome 鈥 Matt鈥檚 brain showed significant damage 鈥 highlighted the importance of such donations and moved the Wilsons to make meaningful philanthropic contributions to the lab.

Cherie said she鈥檚 hopeful the BRaIN Lab鈥檚 work may lead to treatments that could result in better long-term outcomes for patients.

鈥淪ome of these problems are going to be solved,鈥 Cherie said. 鈥淛ust becoming aware of chronic head injury and the effect on kids is really, really important.鈥

The BRaIN lab is a global leader in neurological 91自拍 on many topics, including TBI. With this bequest, the Wilsons support the intersection of pharmaceutical 91自拍 and brain injury and disease.

鈥淩ay and Cherie鈥檚 engagement and generosity will continue to help the BRaIN Lab become a national model for neuropathology 91自拍. This generous gift will accelerate our work to better understand the mechanisms of brain injury and disease and to support the development of new strategies for diagnosis, treatment and prevention,鈥 said Dr. Caitlin S. Latimer, director of both the Division of Neuropathology and the BRaIN Lab.
