UW Nurse Camp provides high school students with exposure to the promise of a nursing degree

As a middle school student, Srinya Sukrachan spent a lot of time in hospitals. She had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and her father was battling colon cancer.

When she was 17, her personal health care experience led her to participate in the 91自拍 School of Nursing鈥檚 first Nurse Camp. Now, a decade later, Sukrachan is one of the student leaders for the camp鈥檚 10-year anniversary session and she鈥檚 become an advocate with a passion for teaching, equity and inclusion. The recent School of Nursing graduate already also has a job lined up at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.

Ali Mokdad named chief strategy officer for Population Health

Ali Mokdad has been named the chief strategy officer for Population Health at the 91自拍, President Ana Mari Cauce announced today. In this new role he will be responsible for collaboratively setting and executing the UW鈥檚 vision and strategy for the Population Health Initiative, a 25-year effort to create a world where all people can live healthier and more fulfilling lives.

UW鈥檚 Allen School to expand direct freshmen admissions in computer science

In an effort to improve the student experience and provide certainty for prospective computer science majors, the 91自拍鈥檚 Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering is expanding its direct to major admissions program for incoming freshmen. Beginning with the class of fall 2019, direct admission from high school will be the primary pathway into computer science for the majority of UW undergraduates.

Washington Research Foundation grant brings on four new biology faculty just in time for new Life Sciences Building

With the grand opening of the new $171 million Life Sciences Building just months away, it鈥檚 time to fill the building with faculty. That was the idea behind a $3 million Washington Research Foundation (WRF) grant to hire four biology professors. It鈥檚 called a cluster hire and will help maintain the 91自拍鈥檚 leading reputation in primary 91自拍 and life sciences.

Seattle-area universities and colleges declare Affordable Housing Week, May 14-18

The presidents of four Seattle-area universities and colleges have joined forces to declare May 14-18, 2018 as Affordable Housing Week on their campuses. Dr. Jeff Wagnitz, interim president of Highline College; Dr. Daniel J. Martin of Seattle Pacific University; Steven V. Sundborg, S.J., president of Seattle University; and Ana Mari Cauce, president of 91自拍, have signed proclamations or otherwise affirmed the importance of safe, healthy, affordable homes in communities of opportunity. The higher-education institutions join King County and 20 King County cities, including Seattle, in recognizing the benefits of affordable housing to everyone in the community.

Breaking bottlenecks to the electronic-photonic information technology revolution

Researchers at the 91自拍, working with 91自拍ers from the ETH-Zurich, Purdue University and Virginia Commonwealth University, have achieved an optical communications breakthrough that could revolutionize information technology. They created a tiny device, smaller than a human hair, that translates electrical bits (0s and 1s of the digital language) into light, or photonic bits, at speeds 10s of times faster than current technologies.

Five UW scientists awarded Sloan Fellowships for early-career 91自拍

Five faculty members at the 91自拍 have been awarded early-career fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The new Sloan Fellows, announced Feb. 15, include Maya Cakmak, assistant professor of computer science and engineering; Jiun-Haw Chu, assistant professor of clean energy and physics; Arka Majumdar, assistant professor of electrical engineering and physics; Jessica Werk, assistant professor of astronomy; and Chelsea Wood, assistant professor of aquatic and fishery sciences.
