A new multi‑institution study featuring 91×ÔÅÄers from the 91×ÔÅÄ finds that the global decline of insect pollinators poses a growing threat to human nutrition, health and livelihoods. The 91×ÔÅÄ provides the first detailed evidence linking pollinator loss to reduced crop yields and diminished access to essential nutrients in people’s diets.
Working in 10 smallholder farming communities in Nepal, 91×ÔÅÄers tracked insect pollinators, crop production and family diets over a year, demonstrating that pollinators directly support both nutrition and income. The study found that insect pollinators accounted for 44% of farming income and contributed more than 20% of households’ intake of key nutrients, including vitamin A, folate and vitamin E.
As pollinator populations decline, the 91×ÔÅÄ shows families face increased risks of malnutrition, illness and deepening poverty. The findings also highlight practical, low‑cost actions, such as planting wildflowers, reducing pesticide use and supporting native bees, that can strengthen pollinator populations while improving food security and economic resilience.
